Tramp

Album | Sharon Van Etten
By T. Cole Rachel

Erstwhile folkie finally finds her voice.

On her third album, Sharon Van Etten finally hones in on what is ultimately her strongest musical weapon: her voice. Having eschewed some of the dramatics of Epic, her previous album, Tramp is all about ebb and flow, with Van Etten's voice at the front and center. Tracks like "All I Can" and "Warsaw" showcase her rang, a quality that vascillates between breathy folk and full-throated howl. With production help from The National's Aaron Dessner, Van Etten has constructed 12 tight musican vignettes in which she can comfortably stretch her legs. Her songs can be a little too languid at times, but when Van Etten lets loose on tracks like "Give Out" -- one of the best kiss-off songs in recent years -- it's hard not to sit up and take notice.
