The Wild Hunt
Album | The Tallest Man On Earth By Laura LeeboveDylan-channeling American folk, from Sweden.
Kristian Matsson hails from Sweden, but the music he makes as The Tallest Man On Earth is more in the tradition of Dylanesque American folk. On The Wild Hunt, Matsson's sophomore LP and debut on Dead Oceans, the singer/songwriter makes his stripped-down act bigger without cluttering it with more instruments. There's no doubt that it's in part thanks to cleaner production, but his ragged-but-melodic yelps are also stronger amid his spirited fingerpicking. Particularly gripping are "King of Spain," in which he dreams of being just that, among siestas and sighing senoritas, and “Burden of Tomorrow,” where he sings about saving others from his inner demons. Though Matsson stands at a modest five-foot-nine, his imagery of jumping into canyons, walking on water, and living like royalty do indeed make him sound a lot taller.
