The King of Limbs

Album | Radiohead
By T. Cole Rachel

Not bad, but...

Radiohead's first new album since 2007's In Rainbows is certainly no misstep, but it is perhaps best seen as a step sideways. Sounding more like front man Thom Yorke's solo material than classic Radiohead, The King of Limbs is the most slight, subtle, and pervasively electronic record that the band has ever released. Still, there is magic to be heard within these eight tracks, particularly on the dubstep-inflected "Feral," the lovely, echoing ballad "Codex," and in the minimalist funk of "Lotus Flower." Given that the record was nearly four years in the making, one might wish that the band could deliver something a little weightier--or, at a scant 37 minutes, longer--but it's nice to see a band seemingly unafraid to follow their creative impulses wherever they might lead, even if in this case that happens to be down a glitchy, digitized rabbit hole.
