The Ghost Who Walks

Album | Karen Elson
By T. Cole Rachel

British supermodel makes surprisingly assured pop debut.

The success rate for former supermodels who want to become pop stars is approximately 0%, so it would be easy to scoff at the notion that Karen Elson -- flame-haired British supermodel and wife of Jack White -- would be releasing a record. This makes it all the more surprising that Elson’s debut, The Ghost Who Walks, is a pleasantly moody and altogether lovely collection of folky songs about moonlight walks and lost loves. Thanks to the deft production by Mr. White, the record channels the warmth of '60s country and conjures up a kind of Nashville noir composed of equal parts Nancy Sinatra and Mazzy Star. Tracks like “The Ghost Who Walks” and “Garden” are buoyed along by Elson’s surprisingly lithe voice, and the expert players on board (including members of the Dead Weather and My Morning Jacket) make the whole thing sound nearly effortless. It might not be the most groundbreaking of debut albums, but Ghost is a genuinely lovely surprise that proves that Elson is much more than just an impossibly pretty face.
