The Cyrillic Typewriter

Jason Zumpano revisits the Elephant 6 sound.

From the evocative but obscure band name to the charmingly handmade feel of this vinyl-only release's sleeve, it's hard not to think of the heyday of the Elephant 6 collective even before the LP hits the turntable. When it does, the connection is complete: these 14 songs are strongly reminiscent of the gentler side of Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel and their various satellites. Mastermind Jason Zumpano (drummer of the eponymous '90s power-poppers that launched Carl Newman's career, more recently a piano-based solo act under the project name Sparrow) wrote the songs to accompany a series of animated films by Shayne Ehman that played in a gallery in their native Vancouver in late 2010. Divorced from Ehman's playful animations, a few of the songs arguably feel a bit unfinished, but the simple arrangements (piano, guitar and drums, with touches of cello and clarinet) suit Zumpano's boyish vocals and wide-eyed lyrics. The results favor atmosphere over hooks, but The Cyrillic Typewriter is a charming little slice of ramshackle psychedelia.
