The Brutal Wave

Album | Frank (Just Frank)
By T. Cole Rachel

'80s goth-pop gets a mod makeover.

They might be the most inexplicably named duo of the year (and no, neither band member is named Frank), but Frank (Just Frank) make music that sounds spookily familiar. Treading on the same well-worn early 80’s post-punk-path as fellow chillwavers like Cold Cave and Minks, The Brutal Wave is a gloomy facsimile of old goth records built on drum machines and black eyeliner. "Coeur Hanté" jangles like classic R.E.M. gone all Siouxsie and the Banshees while "Die in Bed" could almost pass for Head on the Door-era Cure. Like so many of their gloomy contemporaries, Frank (Just Frank) are long on mood and sometime short on memorable melodies, but the best songs here suggest a band that might be able to transcend their influences the next time around.
