Thao and Mirah
Album | Thao and Mirah By T. Cole RachelA lovely surprise from a spur-of-the-moment collaboration.
It's always exciting when two songwriters with fairly divergent styles get together and make something new. In the case of Thao and Mirah, the mashup of Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn's folkier songs and Thao Nguyen's worldly pop makes for exciting results. The two songwriters are not afraid to throw together plenty of seemingly disparate elements-horns, synths, slide guitars, samples-but they manage to do so with restraint. The record's peak collaboration is the minimal, synth-tastic "How Dare You" (a song bearing the stylistic imprint of Tune-Yards' Merrill Garbus, the album's co-producer), but quieter and more intimate moments like "Little Cup" and "Teeth") also pack an unexpected punch. For record that was apparently recorded on a lark in under two weeks, Thao and Mirah is one of 2011's loveliest surprises.
