Solar

Album | Rubik (band)
By Stewart Mason

Summery pop joy from Finland.

Given that they named themselves after the decade's iconic toy, it's no surprise that the sound of the 80s shimmers through Rubik's music. However, the Finnish indepoppers' third album isn't indebted to any one particular band: Artturi Taira's falsetto vocals owe as much to Shriekback as they do Fine Young Cannibals, and both the dancefloor frivolity of the New Romantics and the cerebral pop smarts of XTC underpin tracks as instantly catchy as "Laws of Gravity" and "World Around You." Unexpected treats like the clarinet-like synth hook that livens up "Crisis Meeting At The Lyceum" keep listeners on their toes at points when the songs might otherwise start to blend into each other a bit. Lighthearted and fluffy without being inconsequential or dumb, Solar reminds us that there's always room for uncomplicated fun in pop music.
