Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
Album | Big Boi By Jason LipshutzThe mainstream rap album we’ve been waiting for.
The best way to listen to Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is to ignore all of the circumstances surrounding its release. Don’t worry about Big Boi's long dispute with his former label, or that Andre 3000 was legally restrained from lending a guest verse because of that fracas; don’t even pause to consider what this record means for the legacy (and future) of Outkast. Instead, simply soak in the 15 jaw-dropping tracks of Sir Lucious Left Foot and raise a toast to this thing finally seeing the light of day. Big Boi has long been considered the less flashy member of Outkast, but his proper solo debut reveals his subtle lyrical mastery, with clever verses delivered rapidly over throwback synths and bumping percussion. While Jamie Foxx, T.I. and newcomer Yelawolf all lend excellent guest spots, Big Boi provides the two most transcendent tracks – the unstoppable single “Shutterbugg” and opera-sampling “General Patton” – all by himself. Sir Lucious Left Foot isn’t just what we’ve been waiting for from Big Boi; it’s what mainstream hip-hop has been missing for too long.
