Shore Obsessed

Album | Soft Circle
By T. Cole Rachel

Loopy ambient solo project fleshes out its sound.

Anyone familiar with New York’s art-rock scene has crossed paths with Hisham Bharoocha: having played with everyone from Lightning Bolt and Black Dice to the Boredoms, his prowess as a percussionist is legendary. As Soft Circle, he channels his more inward-looking side, exploring the power of repetition with electronic loops, polyrhythmic drumming, and ambient noises. On Shore Obsessed, he brings in vocalist Matteah Baim and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Vida to fill out the sound. While previous releases were more purely experimental, tracks on Shore flirt with conventionality in interesting ways. “First Time” and “Don’t know” could be the Krautsy cousins of Animal Collective, while “Reaper” is funky electro suitable for an artsy nightclub. The pleasures of Shore Obsessed may take a few listens to fully reveal themselves, but the album affirms Bharoocha’s status as one of NYC’s most tirelessly creative music-makers.
