See Birds

Album | Balam Acab
By T. Cole Rachel

Otherworldly and oddly familiar music from a teen chillwave prodigy.

The very existence of “chillwave” may have been the creation of a few overzealous music blogs, but the newly-touted genre has encouraged the creation of a lot of beautiful and interesting music. In the case of Balam Acab (the musical nom de plume of 19 year old Alec Koone), the music in question boasts the requisite amount of washed-out soundscapes and hazy electronic melodies, but it’s Koone’s method of production that makes it all the more interesting. Rather than use instruments, Balam Acab’s music made up entirely of samples snatched off the internet. Tracks like “Big Boy” and “Dream Out” are so seamlessly beautiful that’s hard to believe that they are really sound collages crafted out of aural detritus. Like an old Boards of Canada record, See Birds is music that sounds both otherworldly and oddly familiar. Here’s hoping this five-song EP is only a teaser for even weirder things to come.
