Rogue Wave

America’s most underrated indiepop band By T. Cole Rachel

Catchy, ebullient indie pop overseen by singer-guitarist Zach Rogue

Rogue Wave is, for better or worse, the jazzed-up solo endeavor of Zach Rogue (his real name!), a native Californian with a knack for tugging on heartstrings with the neck of his guitar. Rogue Wave's first effort, the excellent Out of The Shadow, was a self-released one-man endeavor that eventually got picked up by Sub Pop. Rogue spent the next few years juggling a revolving door of musicians (including bassist Evan Farrell, who sadly died in a house fire after the release of Rogue Wave's second album, Descended Like Vultures) and a series of uncooperative record labels. Given Rogue Wave's knack for amiable indie-pop, it's a shame that they've too often been overlooked in favor of bands like The Shins and Death Cab for Cutie. Luckily, Rogue himself has proved to be a tenacious character, emerging after each lineup change or label snafu with records even catchier and more ebullient than their predecessors.
