Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future

Album | The Bird And The Bee
By Stewart Mason

A fizzy, intoxicating fusion of '60s sunshine pop, bossa nova rhythms, surprisingly substantial lyrics and twinkly electronics

The second album by the L.A. duo of singer Inara George (daughter of late Little Feat leader Lowell George) and multi-instrumentalist/producer Greg Kurstin (who has also recently worked with Little Boots and Lily Allen, among others) perhaps lacks one song as simply perfect as their debut single "Again and Again." But the duo's fizzy, intoxicating fusion of '60s sunshine pop, bossa nova rhythms, surprisingly substantial lyrics and twinkly electronics feels more cohesive it did on their all-over-the-map debut, easily stretching from the arch, tongue-in-cheek tributes "Diamond Dave" and "Love Letter To Japan" to the sweet infatuation of "My Love" and "Birthday." And throughout, George cements her growing reputation as one of the most appealing vocalists currently on the scene.
