Queen of Denmark

Album | John Grant
By T. Cole Rachel

Lushly beautiful, effortlessly melodic, lyrically misanthropic.

With his previous band, The Czars, John Grant displayed a compelling knack for articulating heartbreak. On his first proper solo album, recorded in Denton, Texas with the members of Midlake serving as his backing band, Grant ditches the Czars' neo-shoegazer haze in favor of a more earnest, world-weary Americana. While Grant’s lyrical cantankerousness can be a bit heavy-handed at times (“JC Hates Faggots,” which lifts its title from the slogans of crackpot religious charlatan Fred Phelps), his knack for writing seamlessly beautiful songs combines with his deep baritone voice to make for a gorgeous listening experience. At its best, Queen of Denmark hearkens back to the heyday of mellow '70s FM rock, with lushly beautiful songs that sound effortlessly melodic despite the lyrical misanthropy.
