Psychic Chasms
Album |Heartfelt background music for an '80s teen romance.
Neon Indian's particular brand of one-man electro jams would be easy to dismiss as ironic tomfoolery if the music wasn't so spookily authentic sounding. Crafted by synth wunderkind Alan Polomo, the tunes on Psychic Chasms pull off the rare trick of managing to sound both vintage and futuristic at the same time. "Terminally Chill" and "(If I knew, I'd tell you)" could have been heartfelt background music for the '80s teen romance that you never actually experienced, while "Deadbeat Summer" has the same kind of emotional heft as an old Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark or Giorgio Moroder track. Polomo might not exactly be reinventing the wheel with his smooth synth breakdowns, but it's hard to deny the surprising soulfulness of his work. Plus, anyone who can't appreciate the sentiment behind a song called "Should Have Taken Acid With You" probably shouldn't be allowed near pop music.
