Play It Strange
Album | The Fresh & Onlys By T. Cole Rachel2010's most aptly-titled album.
Regardless of what one might think about the songs on The Fresh and Onlys' third album, after a few listens it’s clear that Play It Strange is probably the most aptly-named release of 2010. This San Francisco band has a history of making freaky garage rock that marries the sensibilities of '70s psych with jangly, sunshiney indie-pop, but this time out all the elements come together in new and exciting ways. "Summer of Love" is a blast of nostalgic sunshine from another era (classic mid-'60s AM radio, to be exact), while “All Shook Up” and “I’m a Thief” are echoey guitar raves that would sound appropriate at a gothic sock hop. Not too many bands can get away with combining jaunty organ riffs and surf guitars for a sweetly earnest track called “Be My Hooker”, but in the Fresh and Onlys' universe, it somehow makes perfect sense.
