Patrick & Eugene

Eccentric British duo By Jim Allen

Whimsical trad jazz, insistent dance beats, and arch, Madness-like ska-pop

Deliciously daft British duo Patrick and Eugene released a couple of sparkling, eccentric albums in the 2000s, but it's a sign of changing times in the music industry that they've gotten more exposure through placement of their songs in TV shows and ads. Patrick Dawes (percussionist for U.K. electronica outfit Groove Armada) and singer/saxman Eugene Bezodis (whose primary credit outside the duo seems to be filling the Nik Turner role in Hawkwind tribute band Hoaxwind) first unleashed their irresistible brand of zaniness on the world with 2004's Postcard From Summerisle. The pair's blend of whimsical trad jazz, insistent dance beats, and arch, Madness-like ska-pop reached its biggest audience via placement in a British TV commercial for Gordon's gin. After popping up on the soundtracks of American TV shows like Weeds and Grey's Anatomy, Patrick and Eugene repackaged the best cuts from their first two albums for their first U.S. release, Altogether Now (Birds Bees Flowers Trees).
