Passive Aggressive: The Singles 2002-2010

Album | The Radio Dept.
By T. Cole Rachel

Catching up with a decade of pristine Swedish indiepop.

Most people in the states had never heard of The Radio Dept. until Sofia Coppola decided to add a handful of the band's songs to her Marie Antoinette soundtrack, but the Swedish band has been quietly releasing beautiful dream pop records for over a decade now, much to the delight of their small but very devoted fanbase. Passive Aggressive pulls together two discs worth of singles (nearly 30 songs!), which serve as an interesting primer for those not already familiar with the band's extensive back catalog. The compilation includes early New Order-style tracks like "Pulling Our Weight" as well as newer, dubbier tracks like "Never Follow Suit." The band can sometimes sound like a more twee version of Air, but even at their most precious, The Radio Dept. craft pop that's pristinely produced and impossibly melodic. Passive Aggressive is a nice way to bring to light a decade of beautiful pop music that might otherwise go mostly undiscovered.
