No. 3
Album | jj (band) By T. Cole RachelLovely but fairly slight.
When jj’s first album, the obliquely-titled No. 2, emerged in 2009, it was further proof that Sweden truly is an infinite wellspring for perfect pop music. Less than a year later, the mysterious Scandinavian duo return with No. 3, a lovely but fairly slight collection of lighter-than-air dream pop tunes. The centerpiece of jj’s music is Elin Kastlander’s dewy voice, which provides the perfect counterpoint when covering Lil Wayne lyrics on “My Life” or on wispy uptempo tracks like “You Know.” Still, No. 3 is restrained to the point of being barely there at all, veering from achingly beautiful songs like “Let Go” to weirdly new-age sounding tracks like “Into the Light.” At their best, jj are capable of creating sublime pop music on par with Cocteau Twins or, at times, St. Etienne, but on No. 3 the band appears to still be trying to figure out just what it is they want to be.
