Monkeytown

Genre-hopping maximalism for the club.

Compulsively genre-hopping German techno duo Modeselektor has always been something of a moving target: they're simply not interested in pinning down a consistent style or approach. Past albums have encompassed everything from glitch-riddled electro house to futuristic dancehall to self-styled 'eurocrunk,' and certainly the band's dense, compacted sound suggests a willful flouting of the Berlin sound's unofficial directive: 'keep it minimal.' Musical maximalism remains the order of the day on Modeselektor's fifth full-length outing, Monkeytown, which features forays into more conventional R&B- and hip-hop-styled material. Featuring a clutch of guest vocalists and MCs, including Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Anti-Pop Consortium and Busdriver, the album's most successful tracks are the thumping, mid-tempo club banger "Berlin" (with a surprisingly soulful vocal performance by Miss Platinum) and the experimental dubstep of "This," in which Yorke's reedy falsetto is chopped-up into a swirling, otherworldly apparition.
