Mark Ronson
Superstar Producer/DJ By Jim AllenHitmaking producer with a recording career of his own.
From John Cale to Todd Rundgren, there are plenty of well-known musicians who have become successful producers, but Mark Ronson is among that rare breed that’s managed the reverse trajectory. Born in England – where he grew up with Foreigner axeman Mick Jones as his stepfather – and schooled in America, Ronson started out as a club DJ, spinning sets whose eclecticism foreshadowed his later work. Segueing into production, he helmed early-2000s releases by Nikka Costa, Macy Gray and others, before unveiling his own debut album, Here Comes the Fuzz, in ’03. Ronson’s production career exploded in 2006, with work on hugely successful records by Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams and Christina Aguilera. His newfound celebrity status as a producer didn’t dissuade him from creating his own music, though, and his second album, 2007’s Version, found him fully coming into his own as a recording artist. While he writes and plays the lion’s share of the music on his albums himself, they’ve included an awesome array of guest vocalists, including Boy George, D’Angelo, Santigold, Ghostface Killah and Simon Le Bon. Ronson also hosts a weekly online radio show, Authentic Shit, on New York’s EastVillageRadio.com.
