Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager

Album | Kid Cudi
By Chris Payne

He has more in common with Kanye than we realized.

Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager finds Cleveland quasi-MC Kid Cudi delving even deeper into the druggy mania introduced on his 2009 smash “Day N Nite.”  Debut LP Man on the Moon: The End of Day brought Scott Mescudi a significant amount of mainstream exposure, but part two of his dark, drug-addled opus continues to reveal demons that would rival even those of his mentor, Kanye West. On “Don’t Play This Song,” Cudi addresses some of the fruits of his recent fame (HBO’s How To Make It In America, product endorsements) but implies he’s already spent the proceeds on drugs and questions his post-fame persona with a degree of self-awareness rarely seen in popular hip-hop. The tortured Cudi still has an all-star production team behind him, including frequent T.I. collaborator Jim Jonsin, Cool Kids MC Chuck Inglish, and “Day N Nite” cohort Dot Da Genius. Jonsin hits the biggest home run here with “Erase Me,” a surprisingly coherent Kanye collaboration in which Cudi works over some Weezer-esque guitar and bass. But considering Cudi himself co-produced much of the album, it seems there is no better artist at translating the MC’s own mental unrest into song.
