Lungs
Album | Florence and the Machine By Nic OliverCool, quirky indie pop that draws inspiration from the seamier side of life.
Whittle away the buzz surrounding Florence And The Machine as one of the new bands to watch in 2009, and a little gem of an album is left shining out of the fog of media hype. Florence Welch may tick a lot of indie pop boxes (kooky lyrics, quirky melodies, dress sense of Björk circa Vespertine), but she has that certain indefinable quality that makes some artists so special. Songs such as “Girl With One Eye”, “Between Two Lungs” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” repay repeat listens, mixing strong melodies with a dark undercurrent of violence and passion. Too many producers smooth out some of Florence And The Machine's rougher edges, but this is a minor quibble for an album that parades a new star in the making.
