LP (Discovery)

Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot members create smooth jams for the dance floor

Before listening to Discovery, the side project of Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles, it's probably best to throw away any expectations of what a combination of those bands would sound like. There's no string-backed chamber rock or preppy guitar-driven ditties about Oxford commas here; instead, it's an assortment of synthesizers topped with a thick coat of AutoTune. The duo's debut, oh-so-creatively titled LP, is a full-on dance record with moments of smooth R&B ("Orange Shirt"), Motown (an underwater-sounding cover of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back"), and fancy handclap rhythms ("It's Not My Fault (It's My Fault)").

Discovery doesn't ignore its indie-rock roots, though, and Batmanglij and Miles' cohorts contribute to some of the record's highlights. Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig guests on "Carby," which is generously sprinkled with syncopated cymbal hits and glockenspiel tones, and on "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," Dirty Projectors siren Angel Deradoorian provides layers of vocals over distorted synth pulses. There's also "Can You Discover?," a slowed-down, electronic reworking of Ra Ra Riot's "Can You Tell."
