Leaving Eden

Album |

Solid follow-up to their Grammy-winning breakthrough.

Following 2010's Grammy-winning breakthrough Genuine Negro Jig, the Carolina Chocolate Drops return with a slightly different lineup (founding member Justin Robinson was replaced by percussionist Adam Matta and multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins) but the same general aesthetic. Like dedicated musicologists, singers Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons gather folk, country and blues songs from the 19th and early 20th centuries. (The pop-leaning "Country Girl," which could be a massive hit for, say, Miranda Lambert, is the sole original.) But they perform them with such exuberant joy and passion that this is no staid revivalism. See them live if you get the chance: they're even better onstage.
