Jack Penate

Adventurous UK Singer-Songwriter By Nic Oliver

One of the UK's most promising young artists.

Although he is the grandson of fantastical author Mervyn Peake, Jack Peñate's music is grounded in more earthly concerns. He started off as a London scenester signed to hip label XL Recordings in 2006 on the back of a growing media buzz, with Peñate ranked alongside Lily Allen and Adele as one of the new generation of UK singer-songwriters to watch. Unfortunately, his 2007 debut Matinée was released just when a critical backlash was gaining momentum. The album reached the UK Top 10 but was given mixed reviews, rather unfairly considering it was a solid collection of indie pop. Two years later, despite having been written off by many critics, Peñate bounced back with an unexpectedly tremendous follow-up. Everything Is New found Peñate dumping a lot of his little quirks (Mockney vocals, cheesy rockabilly) and concentrating on the music. From the Afrobeat inspired “Tonight's Today” to the brassy “Be The One”, the album fizzed with inventive arrangements and rock solid melodies.
