It's Blitz!
Album | Music Group By Laura LeeboveNew York trio trades guitars for synthesizers on dancefloor-ready third LP
On most of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' third LP It's Blitz!, Nick Zinner trades his raw, scratchy guitars for synthesizers at the request of frontwoman Karen O. The record's 10 tracks are unabashedly sexy, glitzy, and ready for the dance floor, but they still pack as much punch as the New York trio's earlier efforts. On "Zero" and "Shame and Fortune," the synths are wavering and fuzzed out, while on "Skeletons" and "Dragon Queen" they're shiny and spacey. Throughout, Karen O tones down her trademark banshee screeches and yelps, but she's just as passionate when she orders "Off with your head!/Dance, dance, dance till you're dead" in the dance anthem "Heads Will Roll." "Hysteric," the obligatory love song á la "Maps," soars with a beautifully emotive chorus of, while the spacious "Runaway" features a plinking piano line that cuts through an atmospheric orchestral backing. Co-produced by Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Nick Cave) and TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, It's Blitz! is glossy without overdoing it, and an unexpected but promising progression in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' sound.
