In Our Own Time
Feature Film | The Bee Gees By Jim AllenThe most comprehensive Bee Gees documentary.
Commemorating The Bee Gees’ 50th anniversary, In Our Own Time tells the story of the Gibb brothers’ journey from underage Australian upstarts to London pop princes, ‘70s blue-eyed soul men to icons of the disco era, and beyond. Probably the most comprehensive and substantive Bee Gees documentary to date, the two-hour film – unveiled in conjunction with the Mythology box set -- is teeming with tantalizing rare footage that says more than a million talking heads could, though the candid commentary of the Gibbs themselves provides the powerful narrative core. We see clips of the pre-teen Gibbs performing live on Australian TV, a wealth of ‘60s promo clips from music video’s embryonic phase, era-spanning concert footage, and even a giggle-inducing bird’s-eye view of a session for Spirits Having Flown where Barry Gibb gamely takes a stab at providing the climactic explosion effect of "Tragedy" with a series of mouth sounds. The lowest points in the group’s lives are tackled just as trenchantly as the highs, including an early rift resulting in a temporary breakup, as well as the deaths of brothers Maurice and Andy. All these topics are addressed head-on for a fully fleshed-out portrait of a family whose phenomenal success couldn’t overshadow the personal bonds that held them together through the decades.
