I Want What You Want

Album | Jennifer O’Connor
By T. Cole Rachel

Jangly folk-pop sounds almost too effortless.

It ain't easy to be a solo singer/songwriter these days. With such a glut of so many completely capable but not totally mindblowing artists out there making extremely similar-sounding records, it's easy for a songwriter like Jennifer O'Connor to get lost in the shuffle. It would be a shame though, considering O'Connor has been quietly releasing increasingly-excellent records since 2002. On I Want What You Want, O'Connor approaches a kind of jangly perfection: folky, gently rocking songs like "You Come Around" and "Running Start" evoke early Liz Phair (in the best possible way), while "7/12/09" and "Another Die" are the kind of strummy heartbreakers that might make Will Oldham proud. The effortlessness of O'Connor's music almost does it a disservice; the songs are so easy to listen to that you almost don't notice how good they really are.
