I Told You I Was Freaky

Album | Flight of the Conchords
By Eric Schneider

Like the duo's second TV season, occasionally hilarious but often only mildly amusing

The companion album to Flight of the Conchords' second season on HBO, I Told You I Was Freaky, like its attendant TV run, is occasionally hilarious, but often only mildly amusing. A clear step down from the New Zealand-bred duo's witty and inspired debut album, Freaky often sounds like the rush job that it allegedly was, with Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie frequently resorting to more obvious lyrics and melodies. On their early outing, the Conchords cheekily doled out send-ups of Serge Gainsbourg, Pet Shop Boys, Marvin Gaye, and David Bowie, while Freaky finds Jemaine and Bret riffing on, let's see, Fergie, R. Kelly, Billy Joel, and, um, the Faint? While a few tunes are up to par—most notably the supremely sensitive rap "Hurt Feelings" and the faux-sleazy glam number "Demon Woman"—songs such as "Sugalumps" and the title track feature our favorite foreign slackers going too far with lowbrow jokes and slick R&B/pop production. Released while the duo openly pondered its future in the press, Freaky shows that the Conchords might benefit from a little time of reflection at the top of the comedy-rock mountain, or at least a very long nap.
