I Heart California
Album | Admiral Radley By T. Cole RachelDream-pop supergroup out for a good time.
Admiral Radley is the love child of the late great Grandaddy and the always criminally underrated Earlimart, two California bands that know a thing or ten about combining unapologetic quirkiness with airtight melodies. The best moments on I Heart California, their full-length debut, happen when the band let their goofy hair down. “I Heart California” and “Ghosts of Syllables” are as singalongable and poppy as anything Grandaddy and Earlimart ever released on their own and offer proof that everyone involved here (Earlimart’s Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray, Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch) are mostly just looking to have a good time. Unfortunately, the latter half of the album feels a little flat, with songs that feel more like half-hearted studio goofs (including the self-explanatory "I'm All Fucked On Beer") than the kind of pop knockouts everyone involved is capable of producing.
