Humor Risk
Album | Cass McCombs By T. Cole RachelSinger-songwriter shakes off the gloom.
On his second album in less than a year, Cass McCombs lets his hair down -- albeit only a little -- with a batch of eight songs that shake off the gloom of Wit's End in favor of a slightly more rocking vibe. "Love Thine Enemy," "Robin Egg Blue" and "The Same Thing" are some of the most intensely melodic and gently humorous pop songs McCombs has ever recorded, while the twangy "Mariah" and dirge-like "To Every Man His Chimera" rank among his weirdest. At only eight songs, Humor Risk feels frustratingly abrupt, but given the fact that this is his second fine release of 2011, that's easy enough to forgive. McCombs may at times be one of the most exasperatingly elliptical songwriters of his era, but he's also proving himself to be one of the best.
