Hot Sauce Committee Part 2
Album | Beastie Boys By Chris PayneLegends get back in the game.
Longtime hip-hop/punk rock/funk torchbearers The Beastie Boys were scheduled to release Hot Sauce Committee Part One back in the fall of 2009, but sadly, Adam "MCA" Yauch's cancer diagnosis delayed the album's release. Whether its predecessor ever sees daylight or not, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two marks a stellar comeback. It's their best record in some time, outshining 2004's To the Five Boroughs and 2007's all-instrumental The Mix-Up. Which is not to say they're always firing on all cylinders. For instance, "Don't Play No Game I Can't Win," a track with post-M.I.A. pop singer Santigold, adds some Jamaican dancehall flavor to the mix but makes the Boys sound like guest rappers on their own album. Much better is "Too Many Rappers," where hip-hop legend Nas lends an experienced hand to a suitably cocky bashing of the current hip-hop game. Elsewhere, "Long Burn Fire" offers the album's standout lyrics and "Lee Majors" features a rumbling garage-punk guitar groove. Ultimately, while it lacks the immediacy of Hello Nasty or the invention of Paul's Boutique, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two makes a commendable effort to reestablish New York's finest in the present-day scene.
