Here Before

Album | The Feelies
By T. Cole Rachel

Unfussy, timeless and perfect.

Given that this is the first new music by The Feelies in over 20 years, it makes sense that the record opens with the lines "Is it too late to do it again or should we wait another 10?" Luckily, it's not too late, and given the lovely jingly-jangly pop music on Here Before, mercifully little has changed in the Feelies universe since they last put out a record in 1991. The new record steers closer to '80s efforts like The Good Earth than the jittery post-punk classic Crazy Rhythms, but they still have a knack for making three-minute pop songs that sound totally effortless and easy. "Nobody Knows" and "Should be Gone" sound like long-lost classics and would have been right at home on any of the old albums. Here Before might not be shooting the band into the future, but it's also in no way an exercise in nostalgia. The unfussy production and perfect pop songs give this record a timeless feeling: it could have been made yesterday or three decades ago. It's a more than welcome addition to the Feelies' sparse but totally essential back catalog.
