He Gets Me High

Lo-fi fuzzsters' giant leap forward.

All too often, EPs are either contract-obligating filler or an attempt to squeeze money out of songs that were leftovers from a superior full-length release. But in the case of Dum Dum Girls' He Gets Me High, the EP provides a kind of four-track manifesto and a giant leap forward for the band. Shaking off the lo-fi fuzzery that characterized every track on their much-lauded debut I Will Be, this EP is a way for singer-songwriter Kristin "Dee Dee" Gundred to show off just how great a songwriter she has become. The title track is the kind of sexy rock rave-up that Liz Phair might have busted out back in her glory days, while "Wrong Feels Right" and "Take Care of My Baby" both prove that there's much more to Dum Dum Girls than simple girl group harmonics. The cover of The Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" is totally unnecessary, but fun nonetheless. He Gets Me High accomplishes more in four songs than some of the current lo-fi crop manage in 10.
