Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
Album | MogwaiScottish post-rockers mix it up a bit.
Perhaps no band in the world is as good at making epic instrumental rock music at Glasgow's Mogwai. The band all but created the loud-quiet-loud formula in post-rock, crafting music that could be both hellaciously noisy and incredibly delicate, often over the course of the same song. The band's eigtth album doesn't do much in terms of changing the formula, but this time around the band adds some lovely flourishes-spaced-out synths and a smattering of drum machines-that spice up the signature sound. The kraut-rocky "Mexican Grand Prix" is one the jauntiest tunes the band has ever recorded, while "Death Rays" and "Letters to the Metro" show that the band can make a church organ or a piano sound just as epic as an entire wall of guitars. Mogwai might not be breaking much new ground here, but the sonic adventurousness on display proves that they aren't exactly treading water either.
