Forget
Album | Twin Shadow By Chris PayneThe evolution of chillwave.
Regardless of what becomes of the pseudo-genre of "chillwave," its aesthetic has already woven its way into indie rock. George Lewis Jr.--aka Twin Shadow--certainly indulges in many of its calling cards on his debut album: homemade synth blips, icy drum machines, and nostalgic lyrics. But the 26-year old Brooklynite seems well-versed in the roots of his sound as well, giving him a much-needed edge over his many contemporaries. For an artist who professes to know very little of his sound’s back-story, his work bears an uncanny resemblance to 80s forefathers like Tears For Fears and Echo & the Bunnymen. New wave dirges like "Tether Beat" and "Castles in the Snow" shine under the production of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, who encouraged Lewis to embrace synthesizers and computerized music. Even the dreariest of new wave acts knew how to get dancey every now and then, so Lewis and Taylor created successfully kinetic numbers like "I Can't Wait" and "While We're Dancing." Throughout, it's Lewis’ penchant for gut-wrenching nostalgia that drives Forget. Nearly all of its songs are deeply personal, engulfed in a lost girlfriend, estranged friends, and vivid personal memories.
