Field Music

British art-pop brothers By Jim Allen

Multi-instrumentalist brothers Peter and David Brewis

Multi-instrumentalist brothers Peter and David Brewis first started recording together as Field Music in 2005, with a self-titled debut album on the Memphis Industries label. Peter had previously played with the Futureheads, with whom Field Music shares an XTC fixation and the occasional band member. Their tightly arranged, technically skilled approach blends art rock, post-punk, and the occasional hint of power pop, making good use of both brothers' facility on numerous instruments. But after two albums together, the brothers decided that the band wasn't big enough for both of them, and they each splintered off into their own projects, David working under the name School of Language in a more guitar-oriented vein and Peter starting the artier The Week That Was. Each released an album in 2008, but before long, the Brewises reunited, unveiling a third Field Music album in 2010 that incorporated what they had each learned on their individual outings.
