Eg White

Underappreciated UK Singer/Songwriter/Producer By Jim Allen

Songwriter to the stars, who also made two of the best (and least successful) British pop/R&B albums of the '90s

Francis "Eg" White got his start as part of late-'80s U.K. boy band Brother Beyond, but quit the group before they started to achieve notoriety. Showing off his multifarious talents as producer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, he quietly made two of the best (and least successful) British pop/R&B albums of the '90s, the first in collaboration with singer Alice Temple as Eg and Alice, and the second on his own. In the late '90s, Eg began working as a writer/producer/sessionman for other artists, including Emiliana Torrini and Madness singer Suggs, but it was in the 2000s that he really began to hit it big as a songwriter. His mix of classy pop sensibilities and sinuous R&B grooves started hitting the top of the British pop charts with one singer after another, including Duffy, Adele, James Blunt, James Morrison, Will Young, Joss Stone, and others, racking up awards along the way. In 2009, after a 13-year gap, Eg finally released his second solo album, Adventure Man, showing that his own abilities as a recording artist had not atrophied during the long period spent writing and producing for others.
