Demolished Thoughts
Album | Thurston Moore By T. Cole RachelMostly acoustic and genuinely lovely.
It's easy to forget sometimes just what an excellent guitar player Thurston Moore actually is. As the frontman for Sonic Youth, Moore's finesse as a player is overshadowed by the squalls of noise that are the hallmark of Sonic Youth's best songs: playing guitar with drumsticks and electric drills do little for one's reputation for subtlety. On the Beck-produced Demolished Thoughts, Moore presents a set of mostly acoustic songs that are surprisingly dynamic. Tracks like "In Silver Rain with a Paper Key" are sprawling, complicated affairs, full of tempo changes, epic guitar passages, and some of Moore's most surprisingly lovely vocals. Given Moore's well-known predilections for skronky no-wave and self-indulgent noise experiments, Demolished Thoughts is a remarkably restrained and genuinely lovely surprise.
