Dead To Me

Album | Girls Names
By Stewart Mason

The first C86 revival that sounds like the real thing.

It's become almost cliched for young indie bands to claim influences from the C86 era, but the debut full-length by Belfast's Girls Names may be unique. As opposed to the lo-fi murk of Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls or the like, Dead To Me genuinely sounds like a rediscovered gem from the Creation or Subway Organisation discographies. The style's characteristic reverb is used with admirable restraint in comparison to the bottom-of-a-well sound favored by many of their contemporaries, and the feedback and distortion are equally moderated. As a result, the deliberately naive charms of peppy tunes like "I Could Die" are immediately satisfying: listeners rarely have to hunt for the hooks. Similarly, singer Cathal Cully's authentically accented vocals add to the verisimilitude in a way the Brooklyn bands can't manage. Those looking for more Close Lobsters and less Psychocandy in their C86 revivalists will enjoy this.
