CoCo Beware

Album | Caveman (music group)
By T. Cole Rachel

Kaleidoscopic indie pop from one of NYC's best new bands.

On their debut album CoCo Beware, New York City's Caveman manage to make simple pop songs sound much bigger than the sum of their parts. Tracks like "A Country's King of Dreams" and "My Time" are built on surging riffs that build into fuzzy pop explosions, while "My Room" and "Easy Water" are spooky downers filled with breezy harmonies that keep the music from ever becoming too dirge-like or boring. Considering that the album's ten tracks stretch just barely past the 35-minute mark, Caveman manage to wring a lot of heavy dynamics out what in lesser hands would be simple, short pop songs. Like a younger, weirder version of The National, Caveman's music never sounds overly labored or in any way derivative. With CoCo Beware, they take the entirely familiar format of the five-piece indie rock band and push it into interesting and beautiful new directions.
