C’Mon
Album | Low (band) By T. Cole RachelSlowcore pioneers strip back down.
On their ninth studio album, Low seem to be getting back to their roots. While Minnesota trio's last few records coated the band's minimalist songs with extra layers of loops, feedback, and sonic fuzz, C'Mon mostly adheres to the austere, less-is-more dynamic of the band's earlier work. Songs like "Nightingale" and the achingly beautiful "$20" showcase the band's ability to make meaning out of even the most simple gestures: gently strummed guitars, brushed drums, echoing moments of silence within a song. "Magesty/Magic" ranks among the best-and spookiest-songs Low has ever recorded, with Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker's voices harmonizing perfectly in a song that could be about ghosts, lost loves, or God. Much like the rest of C'Mon, it's a fine example of sustained, restrained beauty.
