By the Hedge
Album | Minks (band) By T. Cole RachelBrooklynites dream of Manchester and Liverpool.
Apparently, yet another new generation of up and coming bands from New York City have just discovered gothy 1980s new wave for the very first time. By the Hedge is one of the most obsessively Anglophilic records ever made somewhere in Brooklyn. By all rights, this album should have come out of the UK in the early '80s, and anyone who didn't know otherwise could easily be convinced that it did. Comparisons to old Cure records are almost too easy, but the gloomily melodic basslines and hazy synth sounds make them pretty inevitable. Still, derivative or not, Minks manage to deliver beautifully gothy sounds. “Indian Ocean” brings to mind the lovely jingle-jangle of old Ocean Blue records, while “Funeral Song” could have been a jaunty outtake from the recent debut by their equally backwards-looking compatriots The Drums. Minks might not be reinventing the wheel here, but the band’s take on poppy mood music is totally charming nonetheless.
