Music Profile

Bedhead

Texas slowcore pioneers By T. Cole Rachel

Not the first, but perhaps the best.

Bedhead were neither the first nor the last band to explore the limits of quiet minimalism within the confines of indie rock, but few slowcore bands matched the melodicism and quiet grandeur of their best work. Formed by brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane in Wichita Falls, Texas, Bedhead’s music is equal parts silence and restrained melody. Over the course of three albums and a handful of EPs, the band perfected a kind of minimal pop: sweet/sad songs that relied on plaintive vocals and delicately interweaved guitar lines that always stopped just short of actually rocking out. The band’s finest moment, 1998’s Transaction de Novo, would also be its last. Bedhead called it a day shortly after the album's release, though Matt and Bubba would eventually record again in the similarly-vibed The New Year.
