Ashes Grammar
Album | A Sunny Day In Glasgow By Jim AllenEthereal Philly siblings' second album.
This band based around the sibling core of Ben Daniels and his sisters Robin and Lauren Daniels call Philadelphia (not Glasgow) home, but judging by their second album, their spirit belongs to the cosmos. Take the underrated Primal Scream offshoot Adventures In Stereo's love of airy ‘60s pop and penchant for feathery female vocals, mix in the ethereal vibe of contemporary ambient popsters like High Places and Blind Man's Colour, the ‘90s innovations of Stereolab, and left-field touches from madrigal-like vocal moments to dashes of kosmiche Krautrock, and that's a pretty good bead on Ashes Grammar. Listening is a bit like having one of those "floaters" in your eye: no matter how hard you try to look directly at it, you can never catch it in anything but your peripheral vision. Robin and Lauren's reverb-soaked voices float above the songs' throbs, hums, and drones like Bananarama doing Benedictine chants. They're allegedly singing actual English words, but that's completely beside the point. Like everything else on the album, the vocals are all about creating an atmosphere, one that glows in the dark for listeners in Glasgow, Philly, or Timbuktu.
