Anyway, Your Children Will Deny It

Album | Father Murphy
By Stewart Mason

Experimental rock not for the timid.

It can be a fine line between "a challenging listening experience" and "if you need me, I'll be in a fetal position under the dining table." On their second full-length release, experimental Italian trio Father Murphy mostly stick to the former, although the clanging grind and literally howling vocals of "His Face Showed No Distortions" and the Goblin-meets-Skinny Puppy industrial-prog freakout of "It Is Funny, It Is Restful, Both Came Quickly" are pretty heavy sledding. But elsewhere, hints of Jandek's more tranquil moments, the out-there side of '70s prog (think Henry Cow, not Yes), and the fractured experimental pop of Deerhoof (whose mastermind Greg Saunier mixed this LP) make this more of a challenge than a trial. By the end, the minimalistic "Don't Let Yourself Be Hurt This Time" almost sounds pretty. Bonus points for the Julee Cruise reference in that song title, incidentally.
