An Argument With Myself
Album | Jens Lekman By Chris PayneAround the world with a sarcastic Swede.
It's been far too long (four years, in fact) since the music world last heard from Jens Lekman, who turned heads with 2007's fantastic Night Falls Over Kortedala. Despite the lengthy layoff, this five-song sampling of Jens' latest ideas bears a striking resemblance to the Lekman of old. "An Argument With Myself" starts matters off on the right foot, with Lekman pulling off a lighthearted bit of Graceland-era Paul Simon. For a songwriter known for pouring personal experience into his music, the single's stream-of-consciousness quality makes it nice follow-up to past songs like "Black Cab." Elsewhere, the EP follows the journeys of the Swedish songwriter from Melbourne, Australia to "the wine regions outside Santiago, Chile" like an irreverent travelling minstrel. Known for his extensive use of samples, Lekman utilizes more of studio feel this time around, with Beirut-style horn arrangements rounding out tracks like "New Directions." The approach may be different; the results are very much the same. Argument With Myself contains many supporting characters, though Lekman's sharp wit was clearly his best travelling companion.
