Adventures In Your Own Backyard

Album |

The man, the band.

Singer-songwriter Patrick Watson (technically, he insists that on a professional level, the name "Patrick Watson" refers to his entire four-piece band) recorded his/their fourth album in Watson's Montreal home. It's an impressive feat of home recording, given the lush chamber-pop arrangements of these 12 exquisitely-detailed songs. But more importantly, the cozy setting seems to have contributed to a much-needed scaling down of Watson's musical vision, which occasionally verged on overstuffed and a bit precious on his earlier records. Here, the arrangements are warmer and more intimate (think Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver), while Watson's lyrics focus on the small moments of everyday life. The results are Watson's most satisfying album so far, a charming late-night reverie.
