A Treasure
Album | Neil Young By Jim AllenLive document of Young’s 1985 country turn.
In the midst of the dizzying stylistic shifts that typified his 1980s Geffen residency, Neil Young fully embraced the country influences that had been part of his musical makeup since the Buffalo Springfield days, releasing 1985's honky-tonkin' Old Ways. More than a quarter-century later, Young dipped into his voluminous vaults for an archival release documenting his '85 tour with The International Harvesters, the mix of old pals and country pros twangin' and bangin' behind him on Old Ways. In keeping with the inveterate maverick's willful ways, only two songs from that album turn up here. The remainder of the album is occupied by a countrified version of Young's mournful Springfield classic "Flying on the Ground is Wrong," Harvest cut "Are You Ready For the Country," and a set of otherwise-unavailable, raw-boned tunes pitched somewhere between Waylon Jennings (who covered the latter song as the title track of his 1976 album) and Merle Haggard. No matter what style he's tackling, Young has always known how to put a band together, and here he benefits heavily from the backing of longtime pedal steel partner Ben Keith, Nashville piano legend Hargus "Pig" Robbins, and Cajun fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux, among others.
